What are some of the simplest measures which can help you in fighting the flu virus?

Flu is not a bacterial infection which gets cured on taking anti bacterial medicines. It is very difficult to fight the flu virus which takes its own time to recede.

Therefore people should know the various preventive and precautionary measures, which helps you in fighting the flu virus. Preventive measures become more important for a person who regularly gets in contact with an infected person.

If you are frequently washing your hands, you have the least chance of spreading the infection. Cleaning and washing bed and clothes prevents flu virus from spreading.

A few people, such as infants and elderly have low immunity to viral infections and it becomes very difficult for such people to recover from the infections caused by flu virus.

If somebody in your family has a weak immunity, you can take flu shots to prevent infections although the vaccinations are not advised to people who are allergic to certain types of food items such as eggs.

Eating a diet rich in minerals and vitamins helps people in fighting flu virus. Intake of vitamins such as vitamin C and B enhances the immune system of the body and prevents you from getting infected.

If somebody gets infected, they should drink lot of fluids and juices to kill flu virus. Intake of natural products such as garlic and peppermint is also effective in fighting flu.

The highest risks groups for serious infections are:

1) Pregnant women – this group has a very high risk of complications for the mother and the fetus. The risks for having H1N1 are far greater for you and your baby than any risk from taking the vaccine. Ask your doctor about it.

2) Caregivers for children – if you work at a daycare center, are a babysitter or otherwise care for children, especially if any of the children are younger than 6 months of age, you are in a high risk group. Vaccinations will likely become mandatory by your employer.

3) Heath care workers – this group can easily be repeatedly exposed and can readily spread the swine flu to others. Health care workers will probably be required by their employers and possibly by law to receive this vaccine in order to continue working at their current job.

4) Age group 6 months old through 24 years old – this large group is likely to be repeatedly exposed in schools or daycare settings and this group has so far experienced the highest rate of serious infections and deaths.

5) Anyone in the age group 25-64 who has any health condition that is known to be associated with a high risk for complications from the flu, for example, this group includes anyone with asthma or other respiratory or immune system weaknesses – consult you doctor if you are unsure. Persons over 65 are not in the high risk category but should strongly consider the H1N1 vaccine, as well as a pneumonia vaccination. Many of the deaths from H1N1 were caused by pneumonia.

Is the H1N1 vaccine safe?

Yes, it is safe – it is much safer than allowing yourself to be vulnerable to H1N1. The vaccine is expected to have the same safety profile as the seasonal flu vaccine since it is made in the same manner and under the same controlled conditions by the same manufacturers that have been making the seasonal flu vaccines for decades. Also, so far, millions have already taken the H1N1 vaccine worldwide and no new safety risks have been recorded. The most common side effects are mild redness, soreness or swelling at the injection site and in some cases a low fever, aches or mild nausea that lasts 1 to 2 days.

How is the vaccine administered?

The H1N1 vaccine is administered in 2 ways – a nasal spray called LAIN or an injection. The nasal spray is not available for pregnant women.

If you are under age 25, are pregnant, work in a health care or caretaker capacity or have any underlying medical conditions, you should definitely take this swine flu (H1N1) vaccination as soon as it becomes available in your area. I am personally in none of these categories, but, I will definitely be taking this vaccination as soon as it is available to me. I have been following the development of this disease closely for over a year now and am more concerned about its potential danger than ever. I have talked to several people who have had it and they tell me it is not something to take lightly. There have been 16 deaths in my area already and one was a 19 year old girl in excellent health. Even though some cases are reportedly not any worse than the seasonal flu, the reports of many deaths in otherwise health individuals and the possibility that the virus strain may mutate to an even more serious strain suggests that a wise person will get the H1N1 vaccination ASAP. Get vaccinated, or at least ask your doctor what he thinks you should do, if not for your own health then for the health of those exposed to you.

Now, several right-wing hate mongers have used the 2009 so-called “Swine Flu” outbreak to pour more fuel on the already blood-drenched, hate-filled immigration issue fires.  Massachusetts talk radio’s Jay Severin, apparently an illegal alien from a galaxy far, far away, was suspended after he called Mexican immigrants “criminalians”, adding emergency rooms have become “essentially condos for Mexicans”. 

Daily media diatribes of overt racism and human hatred have resulted in significant violence against poor immigrants in the past several years.  According to Southern Poverty Law Center statistics, hate crimes have increased dramatically, including the beating death of Mexican immigrant Luis Ramirez by Pennsylvania teenagers, who were later acquitted of murder by an all-Anglo jury.

A viral disease can “break out” in any apparent “country of origin”, as a result of external transmission of the virus.  European-borne diseases that destroyed entire native cultures would appear today in the same “real-time” ill-informed media reality, as if America was the land of origin. 
 
Since Mexico City and surrounding areas are well-known tourist destinations, it is quite possible (perhaps even probable) that the “outbreak” of the “swine flu” in Mexico was a result of transmission by someone from a relatively immune population.  Thus, the real country of origin could be China, France, India, Israel, Australia or even the United States.
 
People living in Mexico may be less immune to this particular virus than a population located elsewhere, while that population may not be protected as well against another type of virus.  Even close-proximity populations can have immunities that neighboring populations lack, which could explain why “swine flu” in the U.S. was not immediately as severe as in Mexico. 
 
A contagious disease could just as easily appear to “break out” in the United States, transmitted by a tourist from Scotland, Germany, Saudi Arabia or some other population and, be more harmful to people here than even those living in Mexico and Canada.  Anybody who doesn’t understand that disease is by-and-in-large, a global crapshoot, doesn’t belong on the public airwaves spreading gross deceptions of superstition, fear and racist-fueled hatred. 

Some historians suspect diseases that were extremely detrimental to American native populations were transmitted by, you guessed it, herds of pigs that explorers took along with them as a food supply.  What killed off native populations could literally have been a form of “swine flu” that European immigrants were immune to, because unlike native populations, they had built up immunities for centuries living in close proximity to their pigs.

Who’s going to immunize us against inhuman alien swine-balls dolled up in right-wing lip gloss?  Can we blame Swine Flu on immigrants?  What is the real legacy of human hate-mongers?  You decide?
